Peter Martell of Amey won the Rail Engineer of the Year at the 2009 RailStaff Awards. “It feels marvellous and it’s a recognition of the work that we do” says Peter. He thanked colleagues for their nomination and drew attention to the hard work of the people he works with.

Peter joined British Rail in 1994 as a graduate trainee and worked in S&T engineering. Based in Bristol, he lives in Newport and works for Amey as Chief S&T engineer.

He has been responsible for the much acclaimed IET-accredited graduate development programme. Eventually a new starter with Amey will be able to map out a comprehensive career development route. Peter also acts as an IET mentor for electrical engineering graduates and runs the local study group for those studying for the IRSE professional exams. In order to embrace modern methods of learning, Peter has set up an online exam forum for those who cannot necessarily attend a local study group.

Colleagues testified to Peter’s “continued commitment to the rail industry [and] tireless work on processes and systems both within Amey and the wider industry.”
